Disney to invest $1b in OpenAI, license characters for AI use

The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI have reached an agreement in principle for Disney to become the first major content licensing partner on Sora, OpenAI’s short-form generative AI video platform.

If finalized, this deal will allow Sora to generate user-prompted videos featuring over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars, with a selection of these fan-inspired videos set to stream on Disney+.

Disney will also use OpenAI’s APIs to build new tools and experiences for Disney+ and plans to deploy ChatGPT for its employees.

As part of the agreement, Disney will make a US$1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and receive warrants to purchase additional equity.

The companies have affirmed a shared commitment to responsible AI use, including safety measures and protections for creators’ rights.

The agreement does not include any talent likenesses or voices.

The transaction is subject to negotiation of final contracts, board approvals, and customary closing conditions.

Sora and ChatGPT Images are expected to start generating fan-inspired videos featuring Disney’s licensed characters in early 2026.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Disney’s $1 billion stake backs AI work and testing of user-made intellectual property (IP)

  • Bob Iger called the investment “a way in” to AI and framed it as taking part in OpenAI’s work, more than a license deal 1.
  • The deal licenses Disney IP to Sora and makes Disney a buyer of OpenAI APIs, which means tests with fan clips and internal tools for Disney+ 2.
  • At the same time, the company sent Google a cease-and-desist letter alleging “massive scale” copyright infringement, even as it licensed similar AI video generation rights to OpenAI 3.
  • Plans to host curated fan videos on Disney+ in early 2026 turn the service into a controlled trial for user-made AI clips before wider use 2.

Enterprise AI vendors can sell moderation and rights tools to streamers before 2026

  • When Disney+ begins hosting curated, fan-made AI videos in early 2026, it will need moderation closer to YouTube or TikTok than traditional streaming 2.
  • Vendors that build AI content safety and watermarking can pitch streamers now, with provenance checks plus automated rights compliance in scope.
  • The Writers Guild of America (WGA) raised concerns about “the extent to which user-generated videos use the work of WGA members”. That keeps derivative rights uncertain and fuels demand for legal-tech and compliance tools 4.
  • The Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) said it will “closely monitor” the deal for contract compliance, so platforms will need systems that verify exclusions for likenesses and voices set in Disney’s agreement 4.
