Disney cuts hundreds of employees, says spokesperson

The Walt Disney Company is laying off hundreds of employees as part of cost-cutting efforts.

A spokesperson confirmed this on June 2, 2025, saying the goal is to manage operations more efficiently.

The company did not provide the exact number of job cuts. Areas reportedly impacted include film and television marketing, TV publicity, casting and development, and corporate financial operations.

This follows previous layoffs in March and April 2023, during which around 7,200 positions were eliminated as part of a broader restructuring effort.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Disney’s layoffs reveal a systematic transition from traditional media to streaming

The current round of layoffs at Disney reflects a fundamental industry shift happening across entertainment companies, not just a simple cost-cutting measure.

Disney’s own financial data shows the changing landscape clearly: the company reported a 13% year-over-year drop in traditional linear network revenue while direct-to-consumer revenue climbed 8% in the same period 1.

These targeted cuts, affecting film/TV marketing, publicity, and casting, strategically reduce investment in legacy media operations while Disney continues expanding its streaming services, which gained 1.4 million new subscribers recently 2.

This restructuring has accelerated since 2023, when Disney eliminated 7,000 positions as part of a broader $7.5 billion cost-saving initiative led by returning CEO Bob Iger 1.

The company’s approach demonstrates how even profitable entertainment giants must reallocate resources away from declining business segments toward growth areas in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.

2️⃣ The paradox of layoffs during financial growth reveals media’s complex transition

Disney’s decision to cut jobs despite reporting strong financial results (Q2 revenue of $23.6 billion, up 7% year-over-year) highlights the complex reality facing media conglomerates today 3.

This apparent contradiction, workforce reduction during revenue growth, stems from the company’s need to maintain profitability while investing heavily in its streaming future, a pattern seen across major media companies navigating similar transitions.

The layoffs come after Disney had already eliminated approximately 8,000 positions since 2023, demonstrating that even successful companies must restructure during major business model transformations 1.
