X digital payment system to start testing next month
Elon Musk said X Money, the social media platform X’s digital payment system, will enter early public access in April 2026.
X partnered with Visa in 2025 to offer direct payment services on the app.
Musk, who bought X for US$44 billion in 2022 when it was Twitter, said he plans to make the platform an “everything app” with streaming and payments.
The move aimed to tap X’s user base and the rise of in-app financial transactions to create new revenue streams for the company.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
### X Money’s launch runs into regulation and trust issues
- X has money transmitter approvals in at least 38 other U.S. states, yet New York remains a roadblock. Elon Musk has called New York important to the first stage of X Money 1.
- New York regulators question whether X can handle money. They cite staff cuts that could weaken its ability to stop misuse. They also cite Musk’s record of “flaunting regulatory processes” at other companies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 1.
- X also needs to close a confidence gap with consumers. eMarketer research cited by The Financial Brand found 19% of respondents trusted X with financial data. Amazon scored 54% for financial data and 59% for personal data 2.
### The platform’s payment push may shift creator payouts
- X Money plans to integrate Visa Direct (Visa’s real-time money transfer service) for faster payouts. This could ease payout delays for creators. TikTok payments processed through PayPal are usually processed within 72 hours. Bank account transfers can take up to 15 days 3.
- Faster payouts could push rivals to speed up payments. That pressure could reshape social commerce. The U.S. market is projected to reach $71.62 billion in 2024 2.
- Real-time, direct payments also bring risk. Cardless alternative payment methods can lack safeguards such as chargebacks, dispute resolution standards, and fraud liability protections common in traditional card payments 4.
