Digital Edge, Thai energy firm to build $1b data center

Singapore-based data center operator Digital Edge and Thai energy firm B. Grimm Power Pcl have announced a US$1 billion investment to build a 100-megawatt data center in Thailand.

The project is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Meanwhile, the data center will combine renewable energy with advanced technology, according to a joint statement.

Thailand has become a significant location for data center investments. The country’s investment board approved projects worth US$3 billion in May 2025.

Other technology companies, including TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, Google, and Microsoft, have also announced plans for facilities in the country.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Thailand’s pivot to data centers represents a significant energy planning challenge

The $1 billion B.Grimm-Digital Edge investment highlights a critical infrastructure challenge as Thailand positions itself as a regional data hub.

Global data centers consumed a massive 415 TWh of electricity in 2024, projected to more than double to 945 TWh by 2030, creating urgent pressure on Thailand’s energy grid planning 1.

This explains why Thailand is revising its Power Development Plan with three specific targets: ensuring energy security, achieving at least 50% renewable energy by 2037, and maintaining competitive electricity prices below 4 baht per unit 1.

The government is strategically rolling out clean electricity procurement initiatives with pilot projects targeting 2,000 MW aimed primarily at data centers, a direct response to the specific needs of tech giants like Google, ByteDance, and Microsoft who are establishing operations in the country 1.

2️⃣ Thailand emerges as a major ASEAN data center investment destination

The B.Grimm-Digital Edge partnership joins a significant wave of tech infrastructure investment flowing into Thailand in 2024.

Thailand’s investment board approved $3 billion worth of data center and energy projects in May alone, while the country has received over 240 billion baht (approximately $6.8 billion) in total data center investment applications this year 1.

This rapid expansion is supported by Thailand’s projected data center industry growth rate of 7.5%-8.5% annually from 2025 to 2027, outpacing many regional competitors 1.
