Didi starts 24/7 driverless robotaxi trial in Chinese major city

Didi Autonomous Driving has started a 24/7 fully unmanned robotaxi trial in Guangzhou’s Huangpu district.

Users can book driverless rides through the Didi app from December 1.

The trial covers the Huangpu core area, including metro stations, schools, malls, offices, and residential buildings.

The system matches vehicles based on pickup and drop-off points, road conditions, dispatch distance, and local demand. No safety driver is present during this trial.

Users can request rides by selecting autonomous vehicles or combining with traditional ride-hailing options in the app.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The trial appears to run under Level 4 (L4) demonstration permits; commercial licensing has not been announced

  • Didi’s 24/7 operation in Huangpu runs in a government‑designated demonstration area 1. WeRide, an autonomous driving company in Guangzhou, says it has logged over 1,700 days of commercial robotaxi service with no at‑fault crashes 2.
  • Pony.ai (an autonomous driving startup) runs a 100‑vehicle fleet in Guangzhou Nansha that handles over 1,000 paid rides a day 2. Didi has not shared pricing, vehicle count, or exact geofenced boundaries (the pre‑defined operating area).
  • Missing licensing details mean the focus is data collection and user experience testing over near‑term revenue, mirroring Pony.ai’s move from safety‑driver operations to remote monitoring (vehicles supervised from a control center) 3.

Infrastructure vendors can target Huangpu’s roadside unit upgrades to support 24/7 operations

  • Guangzhou Huangpu has put over 1 billion yuan into intelligent connected infrastructure 4. Baidu Apollo (Baidu’s autonomous driving platform) won a 460 million yuan deal for vehicle‑road coordination systems that let vehicles exchange data with road infrastructure, plus edge computing devices and communication sensing equipment in the district 5.
  • Suppliers of roadside units (RSUs, sensors and compute boxes installed along roads that communicate with vehicles) can pursue government tenders. Makers of traffic signal controllers and 5G gear can as well. Night service needs stronger roadside sensing and vehicle coordination.
