This Didi spinoff nets $41.6m to scale driverless trucks in China

Chinese autonomous freight vehicle developer KargoBot has completed its A+ funding round, raising nearly 300 million yuan (approximately US$41.6 million) since the beginning of the year.

The funding round, finalized on May 14, included contributions from Ordos State-owned Investment Group, Shenzhen Capital Group, Shaanxi Auto Fund, and Source Code Capital, among other investors.

The company plans to use the funds to expand the deployment of its Level 4 autonomous freight solutions. It also aims to enhance its commercial operations in various logistics scenarios across China.

Founded in 2021 and spun off from Didi in October 2024, Carl Robotics is testing and operating L4 truck platoons in northern and northwestern regions of China, including Ordos, Inner Mongolia. The company’s services are available in seven cities and serve 20 enterprise clients nationwide.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ China accelerating as a global leader in autonomous trucking deployment

Carl Robotics’ successful funding round reflects China’s broader momentum in autonomous trucking, where large-scale deployments are already underway.

The global autonomous truck market is projected to reach approximately $1.74 billion by 2025, with Chinese companies like Inceptio Technology leading in commercial deployment volumes across multiple regions 1.

While the U.S. is testing over 1,400 autonomous vehicles across states like Michigan, Arizona, and Texas, Chinese firms have moved more aggressively toward full commercial operations 1.

Carl’s expansion to seven cities and 20 enterprise clients mirrors this national pattern of rapid scaling, suggesting the company is well-positioned within China’s autonomous vehicle ecosystem.

The strategic involvement of Ordos State-owned Investment Group highlights the government’s support for autonomous technology, a critical factor in China’s accelerated deployment timeline compared to regions with more fragmented regulatory approaches.

2️⃣ Truck platooning emerging as a strategic bridge to full autonomy

Carl Robotics’ focus on “L4 mixed-intelligence truck platoons” represents a pragmatic approach to autonomous trucking that’s gaining traction globally.

Truck platooning, where multiple vehicles follow each other closely using connectivity technology, is increasingly viewed as an evolutionary step toward full autonomy rather than an independent technology 2.

This incremental approach allows companies to deploy autonomous capabilities in controlled environments while gradually expanding operational parameters, similar to Aurora’s phased strategy for commercial deployment by 2025 3.
