Didi nets $280m series D to advance self-driving technology, AI
Didi Autonomous Driving has raised 2 billion RMB (about US$280 million) in a series D round to develop L4 autonomous driving and AI.
Investors include Zhongguancun Science City Technology Growth Fund, Beijing Information Industry Development Investment Fund, Beijing Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund, GAC Group, Guangzhou Guanghua Fund, and Didi.
The funds will support AI research and the deployment of L4 autonomous driving, with demonstration projects planned in Beijing and Guangzhou by late 2025.
The company has begun fully unmanned vehicle tests in both cities and plans to deliver a new autonomous vehicle, developed with GAC Aion, by the end of 2025.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Beijing, Guangzhou robotaxi permits may not mean paid rides in 2025
- Didi plans late-2025 demonstration runs in Beijing and Guangzhou 1, and paid rides are uncertain because robotaxi permissions are city pilots like Beijing’s first paid pilot for Baidu Apollo 2, while demos need a separate commercial permit for fares.
- Beijing gave first paid pilot permits to rivals like Baidu Apollo 2, and Didi missed Shanghai’s first “no driver” road-test plate batch in July 2023 3, so approvals are not automatic.
- A 74% cost cut on Didi’s L4 (Level 4) vehicle 1 brings it closer to Baidu’s RT6 at 250,000 RMB 1, but profits still need commercial licenses and scaled operations that demos do not secure.
- Didi counts 1,700 safe operational days in three cities 1, a record that backs its tech. Turning test permits into paid service still depends on municipal processes competitors already navigate.
Infrastructure vendors can pursue 2025-2026 ICV tenders in Beijing, Guangzhou
- Beijing’s autonomous driving data governance tender worth 900,000 RMB 4 signals city spending on rules for robotaxi expansion, creating demand for compliance and data work.
- Guangzhou’s intelligent connected vehicle training facility procurement at 294,307.40 RMB 5 suggests commitment to ICV ecosystem buildout, so larger contracts could follow demo launches.
- Suppliers should watch Beijing and Guangzhou portals for roadside units (roadside vehicle-to-everything (V2X) equipment), high-definition mapping (HD mapping), and traffic management platforms. Didi’s 2 billion RMB funding round 1 could align with city spending on V2X systems, but tender timing stays with local governments.
