DHL to invest $575m in Africa, Middle East expansion
DHL Group has announced its plan to invest €500 million (US$575 million) in health-care services across Africa and the Middle East over the next five years.
This investment is part of a larger global allocation of €2 billion (US$2.16 billion) aimed at improving health care.
The company intends to enhance its operations in areas such as the timely shipment of vaccines, stem cells, and cryogenics.
Annette Naude, head of health care for the EMEA region, identified Africa as a key growth market because of its increasing demand for pharmaceutical products.
Grand View Research projects that the continent’s pharmaceutical sector will generate US$33.8 billion in revenue by 2030.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ China’s health silk road creates competitive opportunities for logistics providers
China has significantly increased its healthcare investments in Africa, particularly through the Health Silk Road initiative, providing more vaccines to the continent during the COVID-19 pandemic than any other country 1.
Beijing is actively encouraging Chinese businesses to invest in local medicine and vaccine production in Africa as part of its 2025-2027 action plan, creating infrastructure that requires specialized logistics support 1.
This strategic push coincides with Western pharmaceutical companies retreating from certain African markets, creating gaps that both Chinese healthcare firms and global logistics providers like DHL can fill with specialized services 1.
The timing of DHL’s €500 million investment aligns with China’s provision of RMB 130.32 billion (approximately $18 billion) in financial support to African countries since September 2024, much of which supports infrastructure development 2.
DHL’s focus on time-critical shipments for vaccines and cryogenics positions the company to directly support the growing Chinese-backed healthcare ecosystem in Africa.
2️⃣ Africa’s healthcare logistics market growth driven by demographic and pharmaceutical trends
Africa’s position as the world’s fastest-growing continent in population terms is creating sustained demand for pharmaceutical products, with investors specifically targeting healthcare as one of four key investment sectors for 2025 3.
The expected growth of Africa’s pharmaceutical sector to $33.8 billion by 2030 is part of a broader global healthcare logistics market trend, which is projected to expand from $91.58 billion in 2024 to $147.63 billion by 2029 4.
