Dell cuts 11,000 jobs while expanding AI servers

Dell said its total workforce fell about 10% or roughly 11,000 employees in fiscal 2026.

Dell’s annual report showed it spent US$569 million in severance payments in fiscal 2026, down from US$693 million a year earlier.

Dell’s annual report showed it had about 97,000 employees as of Jan. 31, 2026, down from about 108,000 a year earlier; the report also said the workforce had declined by about 10% in fiscal 2025.

Dell said last month it expects revenue from its AI-optimized servers business to double in fiscal year 2027, and in February it raised its cash dividend by 20% and added US$10 billion to its share repurchase program.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Dell’s layoffs support a shift toward AI work

  • Dell is moving to a flatter structure. Managers will oversee more direct reports to help decisions move faster as the company leans into AI 1.
  • The reorg has not hit every group the same way. Cuts reached the “new logo” sales acquisition team as Dell moves toward fewer sellers with deeper expertise for complex AI deals 2.
  • The changes track an internal shift in what sells. Demand for AI-optimized servers keeps rising, while Dell’s consumer PC revenue fell 19% in fiscal Q1 2026 3.

Dell’s approach mirrors moves across big tech

  • Dell is pairing headcount cuts with higher payouts to investors. Shareholder returns have reached $13.2 billion since May 2022 2.
  • Cost discipline matters because AI server growth can weigh on overall profit margin rate. Dell needs room in the budget to keep funding expansion 3.
  • That pattern is spreading among established hardware firms. Many are shrinking legacy operations to bankroll capital-heavy, lower-margin AI efforts while still rewarding shareholders 4.
