🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Internal CFO succession reflects industry best practices for leadership stability

  • Dell’s appointment of David Kennedy as interim CFO follows a common Fortune 500 pattern, where 69% of CFO positions were filled by internal candidates as of 2016, according to Spencer Stuart research1.
  • Kennedy’s 27-year tenure at Dell positions him well to maintain operational continuity, as internal successors typically have a deeper understanding of company processes and culture compared to external hires.
  • This internal promotion strategy can help minimize disruption during leadership transitions, particularly important given that CFOs now play expanded strategic roles beyond traditional financial oversight.
  • The approach also demonstrates Dell’s long-term talent development capabilities, having groomed Kennedy through various finance roles including his current position as senior vice president of Global Business Operations, Finance.

Strong financial performance provides favorable context for executive transition

  • Dell’s CFO transition occurs during a period of exceptional financial performance, with the company reporting record Q2 2026 revenue of $29.8 billion, representing 19% year-over-year growth2.
  • The company’s Infrastructure Solutions Group has driven significant growth, with servers and networking revenue increasing 69% to $12.9 billion, largely fueled by AI demand2.
  • Dell’s strong operational cash flow of $2.5 billion in Q2 and consistent shareholder returns through $1.3 billion in share repurchases and dividends demonstrate financial stability that can help smooth leadership transitions2.
  • This financial strength contrasts with scenarios where CFO departures might raise concerns about underlying business problems, as the company has maintained its guidance for fiscal 2026 revenue between $105 billion and $109 billion2.
