Dell adds corporate clients for its infrastructure AI gear
Dell said on May 18 at its Dell Technologies World event in Las Vegas that it added 1,000 customers for its AI Factory server business in the past quarter, bringing the total to 5,000 as it targets large companies running AI on their own infrastructure.
The line combines Nvidia chips with software and services, and Dell said Eli Lilly, Honeywell, and Samsung use it for drug discovery and chip factory design.
Dell also introduced a Deskside Agentic AI product that runs on customers’ Dell machines instead of the cloud, and said it is working with Google, Palantir, SpaceX, and France-based startup Mistral AI on private and hybrid deployments.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Dell’s AI growth rests on a large sales base
- Adding 1,000 AI Factory customers matters, though Dell’s AI revenue gives a clearer sense of scale.
- In fiscal 2026, Dell booked $64 billion in AI orders and finished with a $43 billion AI backlog, which gives it visibility into coming quarters 1.
- Revenue from AI-optimized servers rose more than fourfold from a year earlier in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 1.
- Dell expects total company revenue of about $111.7 billion in fiscal 2026, up 17% from a year earlier, with AI sales helping drive that forecast 2.
Dell wants to supply the backbone for private and hybrid enterprise AI
- Dell is leaning into on-premises systems as more AI inference moves to company-owned infrastructure or the edge (local servers or devices near where data is created), instead of centralized cloud data centers run by hyperscalers, the largest cloud providers 2.
- That pitch fits businesses that need tighter control over security and data sovereignty. Glean, an enterprise search software company, uses Dell AI Factory infrastructure for its on-premises offering in heavily regulated industries 3.
- By selling a full AI Factory that includes servers, storage and services, Dell can win higher-margin business beyond the servers, which carry mid-single-digit margins 1.
- That bundle makes the hardware harder to swap out. It also gives Dell a bigger role for companies building private AI as it competes with cloud providers and HPE, or Hewlett Packard Enterprise 1.
