🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Infrastructure buildout phase completion enables margin expansion
Delhivery’s strong profit growth despite modest revenue increase reflects a strategic shift from heavy infrastructure investment to margin optimization.
The company’s capex cycle peaked during FY22-FY25, and management expects capital expenditure to normalize to around 4% of revenue by FY28, down from much higher levels during the buildout phase1.
This transition is already showing results, with profit margins expanding from 2.4% to 3.8% year-over-year, while corporate overheads dropped to 9.1% of revenue from 11.4% in FY23.
Working capital optimization has also improved, with working capital days reduced to approximately 20 days, indicating better operational efficiency as the company matures.
2️⃣ Market consolidation through distressed acquisitions strengthens competitive moats
Delhivery’s acquisition of Ecom Express for Rs 1,407 crore represents an 80% discount from Ecom’s peak valuation of Rs 7,000 crore, showcasing how market leaders can consolidate during industry downturns2.
The deal gives Delhivery a commanding 55-60% market share in B2C express logistics, significantly strengthening its competitive position3.
