US defense tech firm Anduril opens new office in Seoul

Anduril Industries, a US defense technology company, is visiting South Korea this week to explore potential partnerships with local defense firms and mark the opening of its new office in Seoul.

Co-founder Palmer Luckey and the company’s global team are meeting with South Korean defense and aerospace companies, as well as government officials.

Anduril plans to host an event in Seoul on August 7, 2025 to celebrate its office launch, with attendees including officials from South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), and key domestic defense firms.

In April, DAPA signed a memorandum of understanding with Anduril for joint research and development in unmanned combat systems.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Defense partnerships shifting from traditional hardware to AI-driven innovation

The Anduril-South Korea partnership represents a fundamental shift in how defense alliances operate, moving from traditional military hardware procurement to collaborative technology development.

Unlike conventional defense contractors that focus on established weapons systems, Anduril’s “software-first approach” emphasizes AI-powered mission control systems and autonomous technologies 1. This marks a departure from the Cold War-era alliance model that primarily involved U.S. equipment sales and troop deployment.

The April 2025 MOUs specifically target “advanced unmanned combat systems” and AI-driven platforms, indicating both countries recognize that future military capabilities depend more on software innovation than traditional manufacturing 2.

This evolution reflects how modern defense partnerships must address cyber warfare, autonomous systems, and rapid technological change rather than just conventional military threats.

2️⃣ South Korea leveraging economic strength to build more equal defense partnerships

South Korea’s approach to the Anduril partnership demonstrates how the country is using its economic power to secure technology transfer rather than simply purchasing foreign defense products.

The country has transformed from a war-torn ally dependent on U.S. protection in 1953 to the world’s 11th largest economy, with expectations to reach 7th place by 2030 3. This economic strength enables South Korea to negotiate partnerships where major domestic firms like Korean Air, LIG Nex1, and HD Hyundai become collaborative partners rather than just customers 2.

The establishment of Anduril’s Seoul office and formal partnerships with multiple Korean companies suggests a model where South Korea gains access to cutting-edge AI and autonomous systems technology while offering its advanced manufacturing capabilities and regional market access.

This partnership structure allows South Korea to build indigenous defense technology capabilities rather than remaining dependent on foreign suppliers, aligning with the broader trend toward a “more equal partnership” that has characterized U.S.-Korea relations in recent decades 3.
