DeepSeek in talks to raise $300m at $10b valuation

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, is in talks to raise at least US$300 million at a US$10 billion valuation, The Information reported on April 17, citing two people familiar with the matter.

The company has previously declined funding offers from Chinese venture capital firms and tech companies, the report said.

The potential round reflects the rising cost of building and running advanced AI models, while some US investors may be wary of backing a Chinese company.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

DeepSeek comes from a trading-firm offshoot with deep resources

  • DeepSeek began as an offshoot of High-Flyer Capital Management, an AI-driven high-frequency trading firm that uses algorithms to place rapid stock trades. That origin brought computing infrastructure plus technical talent 1.
  • The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a U.S. think tank, links this support to claims that High-Flyer and DeepSeek built a large graphics processing unit (GPU) fleet. SemiAnalysis, a semiconductor research firm, put GPU server capital expenditures near US$1.63 billion, though CSIS says the numbers lack precise public verification 1.

A reported US$300 million raise may sharpen AI pricing amid export-control attention

  • A new funding round could heat up price competition, since DeepSeek’s application programming interface (API) pricing has been described as 10–30x cheaper than leading U.S. alternatives from OpenAI and Anthropic 2.
  • Constraints may follow from reliance on Nvidia GPUs built for the China market, including the H800. U.S. investors may also hesitate amid scrutiny over alleged ties to China’s military 1.
  • Momentum for DeepSeek could speed wider use of resource-efficient AI. Its open-weight models, whose parameters are publicly available for developers to use and adapt, can lower entry barriers for software developers while supporting an ecosystem less dependent on large U.S. tech companies 3.
