DeepSeek helps China narrow AI gap with US, 01.AI CEO says
China has reduced its AI development gap with the United States to three months in certain areas, according to Lee Kai-fu, CEO of the Chinese startup 01.AI and a former executive at Google China.
Speaking in Hong Kong, Lee highlighted advancements by Chinese companies, including DeepSeek, which optimizes the use of less advanced chips and improves algorithm efficiency.
DeepSeek launched an AI reasoning model in January that can train models using lower-cost hardware.
This challenges the belief that US sanctions have significantly hindered China’s AI progress.
