DeepSeek hires for product, design roles in new AI model

Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek has begun a recruitment drive for product and design roles, raising speculation about a new AI model.

The company announced the job openings on April 24, 2025 through its WeChat account, seeking candidates in Beijing and Hangzhou.

These roles are intended to support the development of a “next-generation intelligent product experience” based on large language model (LLM) technology.

This technology underpins generative AI applications, including DeepSeek’s chatbot app.

This is the first time the company, founded in 2023 by tech entrepreneur Liang Wenfeng, has advertised for product management and design positions.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Cost-effective AI innovation offers alternative path amid chip restrictions

DeepSeek’s urgent product and design recruitment signals a significant shift in China’s AI development strategy amid ongoing export controls.

The company gained global attention by developing advanced AI models at dramatically lower costs, reportedly under $6 million compared to the hundreds of millions typically spent by major tech companies 1.

This cost-efficient approach demonstrates how Chinese AI companies are adapting to US chip export restrictions by optimizing resource usage rather than relying on cutting-edge hardware alone.

DeepSeek’s models were developed using fewer computational resources while still achieving competitive performance, challenging the assumption that massive computing power is essential for AI advancement.

This innovation pathway offers a potential roadmap for AI development in regions with limited access to advanced chips, showing how resource constraints can drive efficiency breakthroughs.

2️⃣ Open-source AI models accelerate ecosystem development and adoption

DeepSeek’s open-source approach is reshaping China’s AI landscape by enabling widespread adoption across the tech industry.

Major Chinese tech leaders like 01.AI have ceased developing their own models and instead leverage DeepSeek’s technology to sell AI solutions in finance, gaming, and legal sectors, as noted in the article.
