DayOne, TNB explore up to 1.5GW of power for data center
Singapore-headquartered DayOne Data Centers, which develops and operates data centers, said on September 1 that it was collaborating with TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd, or TNB GenCo, the power generation unit of Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad.
The collaboration will explore up to 1.5 gigawatts of on-site power generation for a new data center project in Selangor, in the Greater Kuala Lumpur region.
The companies will assess an integrated setup that combines dedicated power generation with a battery energy storage system, or BESS, to support grid security and reliability as AI and cloud demand grows.
DayOne describes itself as a hyperscale-focused data center company, while TNB is Malaysia’s main electricity utility, and its generation arm operates power plants in the group’s portfolio.
The proposal comes as Selangor has approved 39 data center projects between 2021 and 2025.
DayOne said the project’s final capacity, configuration, and implementation model remained subject to feasibility assessments, definitive agreements, and regulatory approvals after the companies signed a memorandum of understanding in Kuala Lumpur on August 7.
