Andy Konwinski, co-founder of Databricks and Perplexity, has launched the Laude Institute, an AI research nonprofit funded with US$100 million of his own money.

The Laude Institute will act as a grant-giving organization with a board that includes top AI experts from Google, Meta, and UC Berkeley.

The institute’s first major grant, worth US$3 million annually for five years, will help establish the AI Systems Lab at UC Berkeley.

In a blog post, Konwinski said that the Laude Institute aims to enhance computer science research and promote positive societal outcomes.

The organization plans to allocate its funding into early-stage research projects, called “Slingshots,” and long-term initiatives, referred to as “Moonshots.”

Laude also has a for-profit arm, including a venture fund that has backed AI startup Arcade with US$12 million since 2024.
