Databricks expands India team as AI demand rises

Databricks is expanding hiring and has launched an R&D center in Bengaluru as enterprise demand in India accelerates, a senior executive told the Economic Times.

The India team has nearly 1,000 employees and plans aggressive hiring across R&D and go-to-market roles.

Zutshi told ET the India business has seen close to double-digit growth and the firm has already begun deploying part of the US$250 million it committed to India, including the Bengaluru R&D center focused.

Databricks was last valued at US$134 billion and raised US$7 billion earlier this year.

The company competes with Snowflake and lists clients in India including Swiggy, Cred, and Freshworks.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Databricks’ India investment runs for three years with hiring goals

  • The US$250 million commitment rolls out over the next three years, rather than arriving as a single cash injection 1.
  • Most of the budget goes to hiring, including 100-plus R&D engineers in Bengaluru planned for this year 2.
  • Databricks says India staff should rise from about 500 to 750 by year end, while another published estimate puts the team at just under 1,000 2.
  • Tracxn (an Indian startup and private-market data firm) puts Databricks’ valuation at US$62 billion, versus a separate reported figure of US$134 billion 3.

Databricks is growing its India footprint through skills and product work

  • The India Data + AI Academy aims to train 500,000 partners and customers in India on the Databricks platform 1.
  • A larger pool of Databricks-trained talent can speed up enterprise rollouts and reduce the cost of moving from other tools.
  • The Bengaluru R&D center contributes to global product development, including work tied to large language models, rather than only regional support 2.
  • Across the sector, India is shifting from support and sales toward deep-tech R&D as companies compete for scarce AI specialists worldwide 2.
