Danantara, Russia to launch $2.3b joint investment platform

Danantara, Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, has partnered with the Russia Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) to establish the Russia-Indonesia Investment Platform (RIDNIP).

The platform carries a funding commitment of up to €2 billion (US$2.3 billion).

The agreement was signed on June 19, 2025, in St. Petersburg by Danantara CEO Rosan P. Roeslani and RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev, witnessed by President Prabowo Subianto and President Vladimir Putin.

RIDNIP aims to facilitate technology transfer and collaboration in industrial knowledge, applied research, and advanced solutions.

Focus areas include infrastructure, energy, advanced manufacturing, and food security.

Danantara said the initiative is designed to enhance innovation, strengthen technological independence, and boost economic resilience in both countries.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Russia-Indonesia partnership builds on six decades of economic cooperation

The €2 billion RIDNIP investment platform marks a significant expansion of economic ties that date back to Indonesia’s founding era under President Sukarno, who visited Sochi for talks with Soviet leadership in 1956 1.

This historical relationship has seen fluctuating trade patterns, with Russian exports to Indonesia reaching $681.5 million in December 2021 (up from $612.2 million the previous month), while Indonesia’s imports from Russia totaled $2.43 billion in 2023 23.

Previous cooperation frameworks have targeted similar strategic sectors, with Putin highlighting in 2019 Russia’s plans to assist Indonesia with a 190 km railway in Kalimantan and a $13 billion oil industry project in Bali 1.

The new platform represents a substantial scaling up of bilateral economic engagement, building on a modest but steadily growing trade relationship that has seen periodic attempts at enhancement, including the 2016 agreements to eliminate tariff barriers and boost investments in maritime and infrastructure sectors 4.

Danantara’s move signals Indonesia’s interest in diversifying its investment sources beyond traditional partners like Singapore, Hong Kong, and China, which have been the leading contributors to Indonesia’s recent FDI growth 5.

2️⃣ Strategic investment targeting matches Indonesia’s sectoral FDI impact patterns

RIDNIP’s focus on infrastructure, energy, advanced manufacturing, and food security aligns strategically with research showing that FDI has significantly different impacts across Indonesian economic sectors.
