D2C handbag brand Miraggio nets $6.5m

Miraggio, a handbag and accessories brand, has raised US$6.5 million in its first institutional funding round.

The investment was led by RPSG Capital Ventures and Client Associates Alternate Fund, with participation from Prath Ventures.

The funds will primarily support Miraggio’s plans to expand its retail presence.

The company aims to open 15 to 20 exclusive brand outlets in Tier II and III cities over the next two years.

Miraggio also plans to use the capital for product expansion, introducing items such as backpacks, clutches, and other fashion accessories.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The strategic pursuit of the “affordable premium” gap in India’s handbag market

Miraggio’s growth trajectory demonstrates how D2C brands can thrive by targeting underserved price segments in India’s accessories market.

After 18 months of market research, founder Mohit Jain specifically identified a gap for fashionable handbags priced between Rs 3,000 and Rs 6,000, positioning below premium brands that typically start around Rs 10,000 1.

This strategic positioning has yielded significant results: from generating Rs 1.5 crore monthly in early 2022 2 to achieving Rs 110 crore in gross sales in FY25 (a 130% year-over-year increase).

The Indian handbag market is projected to grow by $207.51 million from 2020 to 2025 with a CAGR of 4.90% 1, creating substantial opportunity for brands that can balance aspirational appeal with accessible pricing.

Miraggio’s expansion into Tier II and III markets further suggests this “affordable premium” positioning resonates beyond metropolitan areas, potentially tapping into India’s growing middle class with disposable income but price sensitivity.

2️⃣ D2C brands’ evolution from digital-first to experiential retail

Miraggio’s decision to allocate substantial funding toward physical retail expansion reflects a common maturation pattern among successful D2C brands that initially built their presence online.

The founder explicitly acknowledges that in the handbag category, the purchasing decision transcends design to include brand experience: “Buying behaviour in a category like handbags is not just about the design but also the brand you’re carrying” [original article].
