Czech Central Bank adds bitcoin on its balance sheet
The Czech National Bank has become the first central bank to add bitcoin to its balance sheet, creating a US$1 million test portfolio that includes bitcoin, a USD stablecoin, and a tokenized deposit.
The pilot, approved on October 30, is meant to give the bank experience with blockchain-based assets.
The bank said it will not increase the amount invested and that the purchase was made outside its international reserves.
Governor Aleš Michl said the initiative aims to test decentralized bitcoin from a central bank perspective and assess its potential for reserve diversification.
Although the Czech Republic is part of the European Union, it has not adopted the euro, giving its central bank more independence from the European Central Bank.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Czech National Bank (CNB) uses a $1 million bitcoin pilot to learn operations
- CNB’s US$1 million bitcoin pilot equals about 0.0006% of its 3.5 trillion CZK balance sheet as of September 2025 (~US$154 billion) 1, so it is symbolic. Equity was about -CZK 426 billion in 2023 2. The bank said the purchase was made ‘outside its international reserves’ and that it is not funded by taxes 3.
- Hands-on work is the prize. Custody means secure storage with cryptographic key control. CNB can test settlement on a blockchain and volatility management. It can judge bitcoin’s viability ahead of other European central banks.
Vendors can serve central banks planning tokenized pilots
- European Central Bank (ECB) aims for digital euro readiness by 2029 4. The digital euro is a central bank-issued digital currency for the public. France is piloting tokenized securities settlement, which means traditional securities on a blockchain 5. Many central banks will need digital asset infrastructure within 24 to 36 months.
- Bank of England is consulting on a systemic stablecoin framework 6. Banque de France, the French central bank, tests wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) for tokenized securities 7. Vendors can deliver institutional-grade custody plus regulatory reporting for blockchain assets. Interoperability between distributed ledgers, which are shared databases like blockchains, with traditional banking rails will be required. Traditional banking rails include payment networks plus settlement systems. Map 2025 to 2026 tokenization workstreams by jurisdiction, then tailor compliance before vendor shortlists close.
