Crypto.com, KG Inicis partner on digital asset payments in S Korea

Crypto.com had partnered with KG Inicis to integrate Crypto.com Pay across KG Inicis’s merchant network in South Korea to let foreign travellers pay with digital assets.

KG Inicis, which provides payment gateway and VAN services in South Korea, said its network handles over 400 million transactions a year.

Crypto.com said KG Inicis holds about 40% market share.

The integration will allow international visitors to pay with digital assets at participating physical merchants and on Korean ecommerce platforms.

Crypto.com said merchants can receive payments immediately in fiat or digital assets and that customers will have more payment options.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Crypto payments run into hurdles in South Korea’s regulated market

  • The partnership aims to support crypto payments, yet South Korea rarely permits them outside approved sandboxes.
  • A payment gateway tried token payments, yet banks declined the real-name accounts required, so the service closed 1.
  • Banks cite an FSC (Financial Services Commission, South Korea’s top financial regulator) review that said that “virtual assets cannot be considered electronic prepayment means due to their constantly fluctuating value” 1.
  • Legal payment and settlement using digital assets mostly sits in the Busan Blockchain Regulation-Free Zone. Stablecoin-based payment and settlement (digital vouchers) are an allowed exception 1.

This payment rail launches amid plans to tighten South Korea’s crypto AML rules

  • The traveller payment rail launches as South Korea prepares an anti-money laundering (AML) rewrite. Amendments are expected to reach the National Assembly in the first half of 2026 2.
  • Draft rules would apply Travel Rule obligations to transfers below 1 million won, about $680, which narrows the current higher-value focus 2.
  • The plan targets a workaround where users split a large transfer into smaller ones to dodge identity checks 3.
  • Small tourist purchases such as coffee may trigger more data collection, which could blunt the service’s ease of use 4.
