Crypto platform Gemini Trust to shut down its NFT marketplace
Gemini Trust Co., a cryptocurrency exchange founded by the Winklevoss brothers, announced it will shut down its NFT marketplace, Nifty Gateway, in February.
The platform is in withdrawal-only mode, with users required to withdraw their assets by February 23.
After this date, Gemini will support existing tokens through its Gemini Wallet.
Nifty Gateway, launched by founders Duncan and Griffin Cock Foster and acquired by Gemini in 2019, was once a prominent NFT marketplace, handling approximately US$300 million in trading volume in 2021.
Industry trading volumes have declined significantly since the NFT market peaked, with third-quarter 2025 trading totaling around US$1.6 billion, an 87% drop from early 2022, according to data from DappRadar.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The shutdown’s real impact is hard to gauge without key metrics
- Recent monthly trading volume and market share are not provided, so the closure cannot be weighed against the platform’s 2021 trading volume of $300 million. 1
- The count of active artists and collectors who now need another marketplace is not given, so the size of any disruption cannot be measured. A separate third-party source says Nifty Gateway paid out over $500 million to artists, yet that number is not verified. 2
- Category results are not shared. Nifty Gateway is described as a “digital-art-token marketplace,” yet no comparison is provided for segments such as profile-picture (PFP) collections or gaming assets. 1
Nifty Gateway’s exit could open doors for rivals while the size of the shift stays unknown
- Rival NFT marketplaces that focus on curated art could try to bring over artists and collectors. Nifty hosted landmark sales such as Pak’s “The Merge,” which a third-party source calls $91.8 million. 3
- Web3 wallet operators, meaning crypto wallets designed to interact with blockchain-based apps, plus service agencies could gain new users as people move assets off-platform. The service has entered withdrawal-only mode. Users must withdraw assets by Feb. 23, after which they can still withdraw NFTs and funds. Gemini says it will support NFTs via the Gemini wallet. 1
- Investors could read the shutdown as a sign of more market consolidation. This is an inference rather than a statement in the supplied sources. 4
