Crypto market cap drops 30% as tariff turmoil hits

The global cryptocurrency market has contracted significantly, with its total market capitalization falling to US$2.7 trillion as of April 2025.

This represents a 30% decline from the peak of US$3.9 trillion recorded in December 2024.

This downturn coincides with broader market declines, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Apr. 2 regarding new tariffs.

Bitcoin has shown relative stability during this decline, despite a decrease to US$78,500.

Its market dominance has increased to nearly 60%, indicating a shift among investors toward assets viewed as more stable.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Bitcoin’s flight-to-safety pattern mirrors traditional safe haven assets

The current market dynamics show Bitcoin maintaining relative strength while altcoins face steeper declines, pushing Bitcoin’s dominance to 61.18%, a significant increase from earlier this year 1.

This pattern has historical precedent. During previous market downturns, Bitcoin has consistently demonstrated greater resilience compared to smaller cryptocurrencies, establishing itself as the “digital gold” within the crypto ecosystem 2.

Research analyzing Bitcoin’s correlation with 14 major financial assets from 2013 to 2021 found that Bitcoin demonstrates hedging capabilities against the U.S. dollar and can function as a safe haven during market stress, similar to how investors flee to established assets during traditional market uncertainty 3.

2️⃣ Crypto-equity correlation strengthens during policy uncertainty

Historical data indicates that Bitcoin’s correlation with the S&P 500 typically strengthens during significant economic events and market stress periods, suggesting that institutional adoption has integrated cryptocurrencies more deeply into the broader financial system 4.

Studies using the ADCC-GARCH approach have documented that the positive correlation between Bitcoin and risk assets like stocks increases noticeably during extreme market shocks, as witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic 3.

The synchronized decline across both crypto and traditional markets reflects how digital assets are increasingly being treated as risk-on investments within traditional portfolio management frameworks, rather than as uncorrelated alternative assets 5.

3️⃣ Altcoin vulnerability exposes market maturity differences
