Crypto infrastructure firm Alchemy launches AI payments tools

Alchemy, a crypto infrastructure firm, has launched AgentPay, a tool designed to let AI payment systems from providers such as Coinbase, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, and Circle work together through a single API endpoint.

The product addresses fragmentation in agentic payments, where merchants currently need separate integrations for different protocols. Alchemy said AgentPay acts as a translation layer without handling customer funds.

The company plans a wider release in the coming weeks after the private beta, as payment flows between AI agents emerge, including small transactions completed with limited human involvement.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Agentic payments tackle an uneconomical setup

  • Traditional payment pricing does not work for machine-to-machine commerce, which is why AgentPay exists.
  • Stripe’s standard fee runs about 2.9% plus a US$0.30 fixed charge, which makes sub-dollar micropayments common in AI agent interactions too expensive 1.
  • New standards are forming, including Coinbase’s x402, a protocol for pay-per-use web access that uses on-chain stablecoins such as USDC, a digital token designed to maintain a fixed value of US$1 2.
  • McKinsey’s estimate puts AI agents in the path of up to US$5 trillion in global commerce by 2030 3.

A new fight is forming around agent economy middleware

  • AgentPay moves Alchemy higher in the software stack as it works toward becoming a transaction router.
  • That places Alchemy between merchants and payment protocols from companies such as Coinbase and Stripe 1.
  • Alchemy’s “translation layer” does not handle funds, which could lower regulatory pressure compared with payment firms that hold or transmit customer money.
  • The competition now focuses on middleware that can coordinate large volumes of machine-run micro-transactions 3.
