Crypto focus fades as Trump prioritizes immigration
The United States Justice Department’s focus on cryptocurrency enforcement may decrease under the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, according to legal experts.
Trump’s team is anticipated to prioritize areas such as immigration enforcement instead.
Scott Hartman from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan recently noted a reduction in resources dedicated to cryptocurrency crimes.
This change comes despite high-profile cases involving figures like FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.
Hartman pointed out a decline in prosecutors assigned to digital assets since the “crypto winter” of 2022.
The Justice Department’s attention to financial crimes could also shift, impacting Manhattan’s traditional focus. Former Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement leader Steve Peikin suggested that immigration enforcement might see increased resources under Trump’s administration.
