Crypto exchange Kraken seeks $500m at $15b valuation: reports

Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken is reportedly in talks to raise US$500 million at a US$15 billion valuation, according to The Information, which cited unnamed sources.

Kraken is a US-based platform that enables users to buy, sell, and trade cryptocurrencies.

A Kraken spokesperson declined to comment on the fundraising report.

Investor interest in cryptocurrency firms has risen as the sector sees more regulatory clarity and increasing institutional participation.

The report follows other cryptocurrency companies exploring US listings amid the current investment climate.

In March, Kraken said it would acquire futures trading platform NinjaTrader in a US$1.5 billion deal.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strong fundamentals drive crypto exchange valuations amid market maturation

Kraken’s funding round reflects genuine business growth rather than speculative hype, with the company’s revenue more than doubling to $1.5 billion in 2024 1.

This revenue performance provides concrete justification for the $15 billion valuation, suggesting investors are now focusing on proven business metrics rather than potential alone.

The substantial revenue growth coincides with Kraken’s strategic expansion through acquisitions like the $1.5 billion NinjaTrader deal in March, demonstrating how established crypto platforms are using their financial strength to diversify beyond spot trading.

This indicates the cryptocurrency exchange sector is maturing from a startup-driven industry to one where established players can command premium valuations based on demonstrated financial performance.

2️⃣ Regulatory resolution creates favorable fundraising environment for crypto companies

The timing of Kraken’s funding round benefits from resolved legal uncertainties, with the company having settled recent challenges from the SEC 1.

This regulatory clarity extends beyond individual companies, as experts at the World Economic Forum note potential shifts toward clearer cryptocurrency frameworks under the current administration 2.
