Crypto exchange Kraken to launch fintech app Krak

Crypto exchange Kraken is launching a new financial app called Krak to support global payments and remittances with low transaction fees.

Krak is set to launch with support for over 300 assets and will operate within a partially closed system.

Users can transfer funds to other Krak accounts or withdraw to their bank accounts.

Additionally, physical and virtual debit cards linked to Krak accounts are planned for release in the coming weeks, according to Kraken Co-CEO Arjun Sethi.

Kraken also plans to add credit services like loans and cards, plus rewards up to 4.1% on USDG stablecoin balances.

The move expands Kraken’s reach into fintech, competing with Revolut, Cash App, and Venmo.

Kraken recently entered stock trading and may go public next year, signaling broader digital asset adoption.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Crypto exchanges evolving into full-stack financial institutions

Kraken’s expansion into payments and remittances follows a broader industry transformation where cryptocurrency companies are becoming comprehensive financial platforms.

Founded in 2011 as a response to Mt. Gox’s security failures, Kraken has systematically built credibility while expanding its services over 13 years 1.

This evolution mirrors what we’ve seen with Coinbase, which launched its e-commerce payments platform earlier this month, allowing merchants to accept stablecoins via Shopify integration.

The zero-fee model for Kraken transactions reflects the competitive dynamics of the neobanking sector, where digital-first financial institutions typically operate with lower costs and transparent pricing to attract cost-conscious consumers 2.

By leveraging its existing cryptocurrency liquidity pools, Kraken can potentially deliver cross-border payments more efficiently than traditional remittance services, addressing a significant market pain point.

2️⃣ Strategic diversification strengthens Kraken’s IPO positioning
