US crypto bank Anchorage launches tokenized deposit platform
Anchorage Digital, a federally chartered crypto bank, is launching infrastructure that lets banks issue tokenized deposits on blockchain networks without replacing their core systems.
The platform creates blockchain-based representations of customer deposits while the funds stay in traditional deposit accounts.
Anchorage provides the blockchain infrastructure, wallet management, and smart contract technology, while banks keep customer relationships and custody of deposits.
Tokenized deposits differ from stablecoins because they are issued as bank deposits within the traditional banking system.
Stablecoins are typically issued by private companies and backed by reserves such as US Treasuries.
The launch comes as JP Morgan, Citi, and Bank of America plan a shared tokenized deposit network for the first half of 2027.
Anchorage’s bank-focused push follows a 2022 Office of the Comptroller of the Currency consent order over Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering shortcomings that the company said was lifted in 2025.
