US crypto ATM operator Bitcoin Depot files for bankruptcy
Bitcoin Depot Inc., a US crypto ATM operator once ranked as North America’s largest, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Southern District of Texas on May 18 after taking its network of thousands of kiosks offline.
The business model had become unsustainable, and increasing litigation and regulatory enforcement were the main reasons for selling assets and winding down operations, said Alex Holmes, CEO.
Founded in 2016, the company struggled after the 2022 collapse of FTX, while tighter rules and some state bans over concerns that cash-based crypto ATMs could aid illicit activity added pressure, and its Canadian entities are included in the US court process.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Bitcoin Depot faced rising fraud losses and direct financial hits before its collapse
- Reported losses from bitcoin ATM scams climbed from about US$12 million in 2020 to more than US$333 million through November 2025. Those losses sit behind the illicit activity concerns around the sector 1.
- In 2023, the cash-to-crypto business processed illicit activity at twice the rate of the wider crypto market, based on TRM Labs analysis. Crypto ATMs account for most of that business 2.
- Bitcoin Depot had already agreed to a nearly US$2 million settlement with Maine, which led to refunds for affected consumers 1.
- The company also took a reported US$3.7 million hit after a breach of its information technology systems led to theft from its crypto wallets. That added more strain before the bankruptcy filing 3.
Crypto ATM operators now face tighter rules that squeeze the business model
- The usual crypto ATM model relied on wide transaction spreads plus lighter oversight. That helped cover compliance costs, cash logistics, and fraud cleanup 4. It also supported revenue-sharing with retail partners 4.
- That model is getting harder to sustain as governments add consumer safeguards. Maine now requires crypto companies to verify that the digital wallet receiving funds belongs to the customer and is not controlled by a third party under its unhosted wallets rule 1.
- Pressure is rising outside the US as well. New Zealand has announced a ban on crypto ATMs. Australian authorities have added restrictions and fined at least one operator 56.
- Bitcoin Depot’s bankruptcy may foreshadow what other US crypto ATM operators face in the next several years 4.
