🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
CrowdStrike’s outage recovery strategy accelerated platform adoption
- CrowdStrike reported costs from the July 19, 2024 Windows outage and follow-on issues of US$117.7 million in fiscal 2026, up from US$60.1 million in fiscal 2025. Quarterly spending fell to US$16.2 million for the quarter ended January 31 from US$21 million a year earlier. The totals leave out the customer program used after the incident.
- To reduce cancellations, CrowdStrike rolled out customer commitment packages (CCP) with credits and other perks for affected clients 1.
- The offer helped keep a gross customer retention rate of 97% 2.
- Many customers used the credits to add identity security modules or move to the Falcon Flex licensing model 3.
- The credits lowered revenue for a period, then CrowdStrike ended the program 1.
AI tools create a new battleground for cybersecurity platforms
- Investor unease around Anthropic’s Claude Code Security tool signals an industry shift that may squeeze platforms such as CrowdStrike.
- AI-native products that automate code and application security push teams to choose between adding them to current stacks or swapping out older suites 4.
- That decision raises the bar for vendors that lean on one main feature.
- CrowdStrike plans to buy identity security startup SGNL for US$740 million and Israeli browser runtime security startup Seraphic Security for about US$420 million.
- The purchases add coverage in faster-growing segments and support a broader platform, which can be harder to replace with AI-driven single-purpose tools 2.
