Coursera to cut jobs after Udemy merger closed

Coursera, a US-based online education company, said on July 6 that it will cut an unspecified number of jobs after its merger with Udemy, another US online learning platform, closed on May 11.

The all-stock transaction had an implied equity value of about US$2.5 billion when it was announced in December 2025.

Coursera said the merger was meant to expand skills offerings related to AI, speed up development, and deliver US$115 million in annual cost savings within 24 months.

Coursera said it expects US$8 million to US$11 million in charges, mainly for severance and related benefits.

Most of those expenses are expected to be cash expenditures recognized in the third and fourth quarters.

As of December 31, 2025, Coursera had 1,307 full-time employees and Udemy had 1,380.

Coursera said some job cuts could extend beyond 2026 in some regions because of local legal requirements and consultation processes.

According to Layoffs.fyi, a website that tracks job cuts in the tech sector, more than 200 tech companies have cut over 119,400 jobs so far this year.
