Coupang warehouse fire enters third day disrupting deliveries
Firefighters in Incheon were still battling a massive blaze at a Coupang warehouse on July 20 after the fire burned for a third day and prompted evacuations over concerns the building could collapse.
Coupang said the fire at the logistics center was still not contained, though rainfall had helped. Authorities believed it could be brought under initial control later that day.
A national mobilization order sent 812 firefighters and 231 pieces of equipment to the site.
Meanwhile, 178 residents were sheltering at nearby schools after officials ordered the evacuation of areas within 116 meters of the warehouse ramp zone. One elementary school and 14 daycare centers were closed.
Officials said the blaze has been difficult to contain because of the building’s complex structure and the large amount of flammable material inside, including household goods stored on multi-tier racks.
Delivery delays are expected in parts of Incheon and western Seoul. Authorities also plan to jointly inspect the sprinkler, alarm, and electrical systems once the fire is fully extinguished.
