Coupang Taiwan head exits as South Korea probes data breach

Sandeep Karwa, head of Coupang’s Taiwan operations, has stepped down less than a year after taking the role, according to industry sources.

Coupang, a US-listed ecommerce company based in South Korea, entered Taiwan in 2022 and has since expanded logistics and its customer base there.

No reason was given for Karwa’s departure, and Coupang has not named a successor.

The company said its Taiwan operations remain unaffected, and that no data breaches have been detected in the market.

The exit comes as Coupang faces regulatory scrutiny in Korea after a data breach exposed the personal information of over 33 million users.

Local authorities in Taiwan are monitoring the situation, while Korea’s government has launched a task force to address data protection issues at Coupang.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Taiwan revenue shapes read on leadership changes

  • Taiwan online retail hit $20.9 billion in 2024 with 7.9% growth forecast for 2025 1. Coupang has not shared Taiwan revenue or active buyers. It has not stated its rank versus Shopee (Sea Group’s regional marketplace), Momo (Taiwanese online retailer momo.com), or PChome (Taiwanese e-commerce platform).
  • If Taiwan delivers 5% or 25% of the $7.9 billion in quarterly sales 2, the stakes differ. Investors cannot tell whether Karwa’s exit, who led Taiwan operations, signals execution trouble in a crowded field or routine rotation in a small market.
  • The Taiwan business launched in 2022 and expanded logistics. Silence on profit, share gains, and acquisition costs keeps analysts guessing. They cannot separate momentum from a pullback after the data breach in Korea and the government’s task force response.

Asia-Pacific (APAC) security sellers watch Korea task force and enforcement

  • Korea’s government moved to form a task force after the breach exposed 33.7 million users 3. Privacy fines hit 102.5 billion won in 2022, with penalties up to 3% of revenue under the amended Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) 4.
  • Security vendors should track the task force actions and PIPA updates, plus watch Taiwan’s Personal Data Protection Act landscape. 73% of Taiwan shoppers report privacy worries 1.
  • Gmarket and SSG.com (both Korean online marketplaces) ran emergency security checks after the breach 5. That creates near-term deals for data protection sellers. Rivals also compare budgets with Coupang’s 89 billion won annual security spend 5.
