Coupang Q3 profit falls short, revenue tops forecasts

The US-listed, South Korea-focused online retailer saw revenue rise 18% year-on-year, beating analyst estimates.

Coupang faces increased competition in South Korea from Alibaba’s AliExpress and PDD Holdings’ Temu, prompting expansion into groceries and beauty products.

Shares fell 2.6% in after-hours trading to US$31.21.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Profit miss ties to investment, core business holds

  • Q3 gross profit in Product Commerce, Coupang’s Korea core, rose 24% to $2.6 billion and adjusted EBITDA jumped 50% to $705 million 1. EBITDA means earnings before interest and taxes plus depreciation plus amortization, excluding one-off items.
  • Consolidated profit lag came from Developing Offerings, which includes Taiwan and Coupang Eats, with a $292 million adjusted EBITDA loss 1.
  • Management guides full-year Developing Offerings losses toward high end of $900 to $950 million 1. The plan favors investment while unit economics hold.
  • Product Commerce margin in Korea rose by over 200 basis points to 8.8% year over year, a sign AliExpress and Temu have not dented profitability 1. One basis point equals 0.01 percentage point.

Naver Plus Store’s AI pushes merchant data work

  • Naver Plus Store launched as a standalone AI shopping app; Naver says its AI lifted clicks and transaction share by 3-4x in four years 23.
  • The platform uses 3 billion blog posts and 5 billion experience posts for personalization 3. This creates work for firms that help merchants tune content for Naver’s system.
  • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers and systems integrators (firms that link client software/data) must map how Smart Stores, Naver’s marketplace, feed data to the AI Shopping Guide 3. This Guide is a discovery-focused recommendation layer.
  • The debut came with Naver’s zero-commission programs for small businesses 4. Demand will grow for onboarding automation (automating seller setup and product feeds) and multichannel inventory tools (tracking stock across multiple marketplaces).
