Coupang fire shifts focus to damage, insurance claims
A fire at Coupang’s logistics center in Seoknam-dong, Incheon, has moved into the containment phase.
Attention has shifted to damage and liability because Coupang operates the site but does not own it.
IGIS Asset Management, a South Korean asset manager that owns the building, can claim up to 440 billion won (US$299 million) in insurance. Coupang holds separate insurance coverage of up to 330 billion won (US$224 million) for inventory and facilities at the center.
Coupang has so far moved volume to nearby logistics centers, and there has been no delivery disruption yet. Delays are still possible in parts of Incheon and western Seoul if recovery takes longer.
Hanwha Hotel & Resort, a South Korean hospitality and property company, was linked to lease and accounting work at the site and said it is not responsible for facility management.
The company said its role in this case was administrative rather than logistics operations.
