Coupang daily users drop by 1.8 million after data breach

Coupang’s daily active users (DAUs) fell by over 1.8 million after a major security breach exposed data from around 33.7 million accounts, according to IGAWorks.

The South Korea-based ecommerce firm saw DAUs drop from 17.98 million to 16.17 million between December 2 and December 5.

User activity had initially climbed for three days after Coupang’s announcement of the breach on November 29, before declining sharply.

Industry observers say this drop suggests customers may be leaving the platform.

Rival ecommerce sites reported gains in user numbers after the breach.

Gmarket’s DAUs rose by more than 250,000 the day after Coupang disclosed the incident, while Naver and 11Street also saw slight increases in December.
