Costco teams with JD.com for China ecommerce
Costco on July 22 named JD.com its only official ecommerce partner in China, expanding its online sales beyond intra-city delivery to broader coverage across mainland China.
Same-day delivery is available in selected cities.
JD.com, a Beijing-based ecommerce company, said Costco’s flagship store offers about 700 products across categories including snacks, household cleaning, and personal care.
Non-members can also buy them, but prices are about 20% higher than member rates.
JD.com said the store drew more than 30 million visits during a month of trial operations.
Separately, users in places including Beijing, Shanghai, and Sichuan recently saw Freshippo, Alibaba’s grocery retail chain, move from Taobao’s Flash Purchase section to a homepage slot on the first screen in some regions.
Analysts said the nearly simultaneous moves by Costco and Freshippo suggest instant retail competition is shifting from delivery speed to supply exclusivity and deeper integration with major app channels.
