US consumer confidence hits 4-year high on trade truce
US consumer confidence rebounded significantly in May 2025, achieving its highest monthly gain in four years, according to data from The Conference Board.
The confidence index rose by 12.3 points to 98, exceeding forecasts in a Bloomberg survey of economists.
The rise was driven by a sharp increase in expectations for the next six months, marking the largest rise since 2011.
Current conditions also showed an uptick, with gains reported across various age groups, income levels, and political affiliations, particularly among Republican respondents.
The data collection ended May 19, 2025, shortly after the US and China agreed to pause tariff hikes, with about half the responses gathered after the May 12, 2025 truce.
Economist Stephanie Guichard noted the confidence rebound began before the trade deal but accelerated after, though concerns remain as Trump continues to threaten new tariffs.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Consumer expectations remain in recession territory despite confidence rebound
The May consumer confidence rebound to 98 represents a dramatic shift in sentiment, but economic anxiety still lingers beneath the surface.
While the expectations index jumped 17.4 points to 72.8, it remains well below the critical recession threshold of 80, a technical indicator economists watch closely 1.
This pattern has historical significance, as consumer confidence expectations have averaged 79.52 since tracking began in 1952, with the current reading still below this long-term average despite the recent improvement 2.
The disconnect between improving headline confidence and persistent recession concerns mirrors similar patterns during previous periods of economic uncertainty, when consumers expressed optimism about immediate conditions while maintaining caution about longer-term prospects.
Notably, the confidence rebound occurred across demographic segments but was strongest among Republicans, suggesting political affiliation continues to influence economic outlook, a phenomenon that has intensified in recent years.
2️⃣ Tariffs have measurable, rapid impacts on consumer prices
The consumer confidence rebound following the US-China tariff truce highlights how trade policy directly influences economic sentiment through its impact on prices.
