Commonwealth Bank cancels AI job cuts after union pressure
Commonwealth Bank of Australia has reversed plans to cut 45 customer service jobs after facing pressure from the Finance Sector Union.
The Sydney-based bank, the country’s largest lender, initially linked the planned cuts to a voice bot that it said reduced call volumes by 2,000 a week.
Union representatives disputed this, saying that call volumes were rising and staff were offered overtime and asked to help answer calls.
After a workplace relations tribunal case, CBA said its earlier assessment did not fully consider all relevant business needs and apologized to affected employees.
Impacted staff can choose to stay in their roles, apply for other positions, or leave the bank.
CBA is also reviewing its internal processes for future decisions.
The bank recently announced a partnership with OpenAI to expand its use of AI technology.
