Anthropic can restore limited access to its Mythos 5 model after the US Commerce Department said in a June 27 letter that the company had addressed some national security concerns.

The approval allows release to certain trusted partners, while restrictions on Fable 5 remain.

The decision partly reverses a restriction imposed two weeks earlier that blocked foreign nationals from accessing both models and prompted Anthropic to suspend global access.

Anthropic said Mythos 5 would return to a small group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers, while talks with the US government on Fable 5 continued.

The move comes amid a broader Bureau of Industry and Security framework that requires licenses for exports, reexports, and in-country transfers of the most advanced closed-weight AI model weights, including models trained on 10²⁶+ computational operations.

The rules apply stricter controls to destinations outside designated low-risk countries.
