Y Combinator alum launches $34m fund focused on YC-backed startups
Phosphor Capital, a venture firm focused on Y Combinator (YC) startups, has raised US$34 million across two funds since its launch in 2024.
Founded by Kulveer Taggar, a two-time YC alum, it is the only YC-focused fund led by a solo general partner.
Taggar, who co-founded Zeus Living and Auctomatic, established Phosphor after exiting Zeus Living in 2023.
The firm has invested in over 200 YC companies, with check sizes ranging from US$100,000 to US$500,000.
Notable investments include workflow automation platform Gumloop and AI meeting manager Circleback.
Phosphor’s limited partners include family offices, a large asset manager, and previous investors from Zeus Living.
Taggar sees Phosphor as a bet on YC’s future under CEO Garry Tan’s leadership, especially in early-stage AI ventures.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Y Combinator’s consistent outperformance justifies dedicated investment vehicles
The emergence of YC-focused funds like Phosphor Capital reflects the accelerator’s exceptional track record in producing valuable companies since its 2005 founding.
With 6% of YC companies reaching unicorn status and a quarter of those becoming decacorns (valued at over $10 billion), YC has demonstrated remarkable success as a talent filter for investors 1.
By 2015, one-third of startups raising Series A funding were graduates of accelerator programs, highlighting how these programs serve as effective screening mechanisms for identifying promising early-stage companies 2.
This consistent performance helps explain why Taggar could raise $34 million relatively easily despite being a solo GP, as investors recognize YC’s portfolio as a fertile hunting ground for outsized returns.
The accelerator’s model of taking approximately 6% equity in exchange for seed funding and intensive mentorship has proven effective at nurturing companies that reshape entire industries 3.
