Coinbase unveils wallets for AI agents to manage crypto

Coinbase has announced the launch of Agentic Wallets, a new infrastructure designed for autonomous AI agents to manage digital assets securely.

These wallets enable agents to spend, earn, and trade independently, with built-in security features and programmable guardrails.

The wallets incorporate the x402 protocol, a payments standard used in over 50 million transactions, allowing machine-to-machine payments and API access without human intervention.

They also support gasless trading on Coinbase’s Base network, ensuring continuous operation.

The wallets include a command-line tool for quick setup and pre-built skills for on-chain actions like trading and funding.

Security measures include transaction limits, session caps, enclave isolation, and automatic KYT screening, all managed through Coinbase’s CDP Security Suite.

Coinbase explains that these wallets aim to facilitate autonomous DeFi, creator economy participation, and multi-chain operations for AI agents.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Coinbase is not alone in the race for agentic commerce

  • Coinbase’s announcement lands in “agentic commerce,” where AI agents transact on behalf of users 1.
  • Google, OpenAI in partnership with Stripe, Visa, and Mastercard are building frameworks for AI-driven commerce and payments 1.
  • The underlying x402 protocol (a payments standard that enables machine-to-machine payments and API access without human intervention) is being developed with other stakeholders; in September, Cloudflare and Coinbase jointly launched the x402 Foundation to promote adoption of the protocol 2.
  • Investors reacted cautiously, with Coinbase’s stock (COIN) dropping about 6% to $152.71 after the product news, one report said 3.

This enables a new economy where software pays its own bills

  • Coinbase frames the effort as infrastructure for a “machine economy,” rather than a tool for AI crypto trading 4.
  • Software agents can pay routine operating costs, including API fees and compute, through machine-to-machine payments 3.
  • Billing could move from monthly subscriptions to real-time, usage-based payments between machines, often settled with stablecoins (cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a steady value, typically pegged to a fiat currency like the U.S. dollar) 1.
  • Wider adoption could speed up self-sustaining applications; one report cites McKinsey’s November 2025 projection that AI agents could handle 20% of global transactions by 2030 5.
