Coinbase leads $5m seed round for new crypto firm Pye Finance

Pye Finance has raised US$5 million in a seed round led by Variant and Coinbase Ventures, with participation from Solana Labs, Nascent, and Gemini.

The startup is developing an on-chain marketplace on the Solana blockchain for trading time-locked staking positions.

Pye Finance says its product targets the large pool of staked SOL, which is locked and typically not tradable or customizable.

The company plans to allow validators to set terms such as lockups and reward flows, and to tokenize locked staking positions into assets that represent principal and rewards.

Pye Finance was founded by Erik Ashdown and Alberto Cevallos.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Solana’s locked staking market is likely smaller than it appears

  • About 67% of SOL is staked 1, but most of it is not locked. Typical positions face a 2 to 3 day cooldown before withdrawal, not a long-term lockup 2.
  • Locked stake accounts, which cannot withdraw until a set date, sit at roughly 6.2% of staked SOL per Solana Compass (a community analytics dashboard for Solana). The rest can exit after the cooldown 2.
  • Pye Finance aims at holders who cannot access their SOL for long spans. That focus cuts the reachable market compared with the headline 67% staking share, since most stakers can leave in 2 to 3 days.

Validator tooling providers can benefit from customizable staking terms

  • If Pye lets validators (network operators that run nodes to secure Solana and process transactions) set custom lockups and reward flows, third-party tools can help plan terms and promote offerings. Teams can also track rivals.
  • The top 25 validators hold 46.3% of all staked SOL 1. Helius (a Solana infrastructure provider; 9.76%), Binance Staking (the staking arm of crypto exchange Binance; 9.25%), and Galaxy (a digital asset firm; 7.01%) rank among the largest holders of delegated stake (tokens that holders assign to validators to stake on their behalf) 3.
  • Analytics that gauge risk can forecast demand for varied lockup terms and benchmark offers against peers as this secondary market (the trading of tokenized, locked staking positions) grows.
