Coinbase expands beyond crypto to offer stocks, trading
Coinbase announced a major expansion December 17, adding stock trading, prediction markets, and new trading tools to its platform.
The US-based cryptocurrency exchange is aiming to become a one-stop app for retail investing, moving beyond cryptocurrency to include equities and outcome-based trading.
Coinbase is introducing prediction markets via Kalshi and rolling out a roadmap for bringing more traditional assets, such as stocks, on-chain.
The company is also launching Coinbase Tokenize for institutional clients to support real-world asset tokenization. Coinbase Business is now available to eligible users in the US and Singapore, with expanded APIs for custody, payments, trading, and stablecoins.
Other players, including DraftKings, FanDuel, Polymarket, and Robinhood, are also moving into regulated prediction markets.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Coinbase leaves gaps on stock trading setup and timing
- Coinbase announced stock trading through Coinbase Capital Markets Corp (CCM), but only some U.S. residents have access, and the launch is still rolling out with no firm timeline for expansion 1. Apex Clearing Corporation handles execution plus clearing and custody of securities 1. That setup fits an introducing-broker model rather than a self-clearing brokerage (i.e. a broker that outsources clearing and custody to a third-party firm instead of handling those functions in-house).
- CCM holds Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) membership 2. Coinbase has not named which stocks will be available beyond “eligible” symbols or limited fractional trading (the ability to buy less than one full share) 1. The U.S. launch is phased, with a third-party clearing firm in use, so this remains an early-stage equities offering.
Payment service providers see early x402 openings
- X402 enables instant payments in USD Coin (USDC), a dollar-pegged stablecoin 3. Transfers run over HTTP with Know Your Transaction (KYT) screening from Coinbase, including Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and illicit finance checks 3, which gives payment service providers and e-commerce platforms a path to integrate. BuffetPay and Cal.com already ship x402 4, which signals demand for stablecoin rails that skip card networks.
- Developers can build on an open x402 standard 5 with SDKs in TypeScript, Python, and Go 6. That opens room for compliance layers, fraud tools, and merchant plugins. Early teams can focus on API-first businesses (software companies that expose core functionality through APIs) and AI apps that charge per request 4.
