Coinbase drops after Q2 revenue miss on low trading volume
Coinbase shares fell 7% in after-hours trading after the company reported second-quarter revenue of US$1.5 billion, missing analyst expectations of US$1.59 billion.
Coinbase is a San Francisco-based company that operates the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the US.
Revenue rose 3.3% year-on-year but declined from US$2 billion in the previous quarter.
Net income rose to US$1.43 billion, driven by gains from the increased value of its cryptocurrency holdings and investments, including its stake in Circle Internet Group.
Trading volumes dropped globally and in the US due to flat crypto markets and weaker retail activity.
Coinbase is exploring expansion into traditional stocks, prediction markets, FX, treasuries, and commodities.
The company recorded US$307 million in expenses related to a security incident disclosed in May 2025.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Stablecoin legislation creates new revenue tailwinds amid trading slowdown
Coinbase’s $332 million in stablecoin revenue this quarter comes at a pivotal moment, as the recently passed GENIUS Act establishes the first federal regulatory framework for stablecoins in the US.
The legislation requires stablecoin issuers to maintain one-to-one reserves and mandates regular audits, which should boost confidence in these digital currencies 1. This regulatory clarity arrives as stablecoin usage has surged 28% in the past year 2.
Coinbase benefits from this growth through its revenue-sharing agreement with Circle, the stablecoin issuer that went public in June. The GENIUS Act specifically permits banks and approved entities like Circle to issue stablecoins, potentially cementing established players’ market positions while creating barriers for new entrants 1.
This regulatory framework could provide Coinbase with a more predictable revenue stream that’s less correlated to crypto market volatility, aligning with CEO Brian Armstrong’s efforts to diversify as traditional trading volumes decline.
2️⃣ Market leadership position faces intensifying global competition
While Coinbase missed revenue expectations, the company maintains its position as the third-largest crypto exchange globally by trading volume, trailing only Binance and Bybit 3.
