Coinbase CEO explains why engineers were fired over AI tools

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the company fired engineers who failed to onboard with AI coding assistants without a good reason, after Coinbase purchased enterprise licenses for GitHub Copilot and Cursor.

He mandated all engineers to begin using the tools, requiring them to at least sign up within a week.

Armstrong held a Saturday meeting for those who had not onboarded. Some gave reasons such as recent travel, while others without a good reason were dismissed.

He described the move as “heavy-handed,” but said it reinforced that AI adoption is not optional at Coinbase.

The company now holds monthly meetings for teams to share AI use cases.

On a podcast hosted by Stripe co-founder John Collison, Armstrong admitted there are challenges in running an AI-coded codebase.

Previous reports note Coinbase has allocated resources to improve its code repository management.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tech leaders increasingly use mandates to overcome stubborn AI adoption barriers

Armstrong’s firing approach mirrors a broader industry trend where executives mandate AI use after witnessing slow organic adoption rates.

Microsoft has similarly declared AI “no longer optional” across its workforce and plans to integrate AI usage into performance reviews 2.

This approach addresses a documented problem: McKinsey research shows that while 70% of organizations invest in AI, only 20% successfully implement it at scale 3.

Cultural resistance consistently emerges as one of the top barriers to AI adoption, often outweighing technical challenges 4.

Companies report that employees resist AI due to fear of job displacement and general skepticism about new technology 5.

The trend suggests tech leaders view mandates as necessary to overcome organizational inertia that has historically slowed enterprise AI rollouts.
