Coinbase, Bybit in talks to tokenize US stocks

Coinbase is in talks with Bybit, a Dubai-based crypto trading platform, to explore tokenizing assets including US public and pre-IPO stocks.

The talks are ongoing and could help offer US assets to users outside the country.

Bybit also plans a separate US joint venture with a local partner for licensing and compliance.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Tokenized stocks stay small under regulatory pressure

  • Tokenized public equities remain a small market, worth less than US$1 billion in early 2026. Tokenized US Treasuries plus private credit total about US$28 billion 1.
  • Established financial firms plus stock exchanges are pushing back 2.
  • The World Federation of Exchanges, which represents many of the world’s largest stock exchanges, has asked U.S. plus EU regulators to rein in tokenized stocks. The group says these products can confuse investors and lack proper safeguards 2.
  • Bybit says it is taking a compliance-first approach. The company says it is the first crypto exchange to win a full Virtual Asset Platform Operator License from the United Arab Emirates’ federal Securities and Commodities Authority, the country’s national markets regulator 3.

A global finance model could pressure traditional exchanges

  • The Coinbase-Bybit tie-up suggests an originate-to-distribute model for finance. Coinbase would create tokenized versions of U.S. assets, while Bybit would distribute them outside the U.S. 4.
  • The setup aims to give non-U.S. investors access to popular U.S. assets. It could also skip parts of the usual trading system plus some middlemen 4.
  • Backers say tokenization can bring round-the-clock trading, faster settlement, plus lower costs. That could pull volume from established stock exchanges 2.
  • The outcome hinges on regulation. A freely transferable model could let tokenized stocks serve as collateral across decentralized finance, or DeFi, blockchain-based financial services that operate without traditional intermediaries 1.
