Cloudflare outage hits users worldwide before recovery
Cloudflare experienced a global service disruption on November 18, impacting some users with increased errors and latency.
The US-based web infrastructure company reported that affected services included its dashboard, app services, and WARP network access, with intermittent issues seen across multiple regions.
Cloudflare said its engineering teams identified the cause and began rolling out fixes around 13:09 UTC, with error rates returning to normal by 17:44 UTC.
The company is continuing to investigate the incident and monitor its platform.
Separately, Cloudflare scheduled maintenance at its Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, and Atlanta data centers on November 18, which may have temporarily affected network performance and latency for users in those areas.
Customers connecting through these data centers were advised of possible service rerouting and temporary unavailability during the maintenance windows.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Cloudflare outage shows its configuration management did not keep up with threat traffic
- During the November 18 incident, Cloudflare said there was no evidence of a cyberattack; an auto-generated configuration file for managing threat traffic (potentially malicious requests) grew beyond expected size and crashed core traffic software 1.
- Cloudflare averages 78 million HTTP requests per second, yet its internal tooling did not anticipate the volume growth 1.
- The outage ran from 11:20 UTC to 14:30 UTC. It hit ChatGPT and X 12. Spotify and Microsoft Teams had issues too 12.
- To recover service, Cloudflare temporarily disabled WARP access (its network access service) in London 3.
Multi-CDN vendors see an opening with Cloudflare’s 24 million sites
- 24,030,148 active websites use Cloudflare globally 4. 4,332 of the top 10,000 rely on it, which gives multi-Content Delivery Network (CDN) and Domain Name System (DNS) failover a large market 4.
- Observability vendors are companies that provide monitoring, logging, and tracing to track system health. They can target Cloudflare’s 210,166 paying customers, especially the 3,046 spending over $100,000 annually, who now have proof a single-provider strategy creates risk 4.
- Usage-tracking tools like BuiltWith can spot high-traffic sites dependent on Cloudflare. BuiltWith is a website technology profiler that scans sites to identify what services they use, which helps vendors build targeted lead lists.
- The US market looks attractive with 2,469,436 Cloudflare websites and $678.18 million in US revenue, which signals buyers willing to pay for reliability 4.
